MSC Malaysia Game Design Competition 2007



Title : MSC Malaysia Game Design Competition 2007
Deadline : 28 June 2007.
Prize : 3 winners will be awarded RM 50,000 grant each

Description :
The Creative Multimedia Department of Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) is organizing a Computer Games Design Competition. In this competition, companies or teams will have to pitch their idea, game play, business module, schedule & budget, technical approach, game content development and commercialization of their game.

OBJECTIVE:

• To use this as a content creation platform and to create more quality content that can be showcased or marketed globally.
• The competition will be an avenue to encourage and nurture new talents in turning their Ideas into reality.
• To attract game content developers/publisher to come out with greater ideas and stories.

3 winners will be awarded RM 50,000 grant each, to develop a fully playable electronic game based on the given budget.

Submission will be open until 28 June 2007. MDeC will be organizing workshops in the months of April, May and June 2007 for the benefit of interested participants. These workshops will help budding game developers to have a better understanding of the requirements needed to develop a game within the allocated budget. These workshops will also help participants to come up with strong proposals for the eventual pitch.





1. HOW DO I REGISTER?
This competition is only open to Malaysia companies, SME individuals, and graduated students only. Only one entry per company / team. Grant Winners of MSC Malaysia Computer Games Design Competition 2006 are not eligible to participate in this competition.

2. FORMAT OF THE PROPOSAL:

i. Language: English, or if not in English shall include an English translation as attachment

ii. Table of Contents

iii. Company / Personal Profile

iv. Game Proposal Details:

• Synopsis
• Game content document
(Does the design document describe every aspect yoyo of the game with inclusive of character bible, prop/background design, level design, music, SFX design and etc?)
• Technical document
(Is the technical approach suitable for particular game?)
• GUI & Layout design
(Is the GUI design user friendly?)
• Feasibility of development of the game prototype on PCs with given budget
(Could this game actually be made into a real game today?)
• Innovation
(Is the idea innovative and different from other games out there?)
• Appeal of the idea (Game play)
(Does this game sound interesting and fun to play?)
• Business Module
(Description of your company / team marketing plan in terms of marketing activities, strategies, unique selling points and target audience.)
• Production Timeline
(The maximum timeline for every production is 6 months. Please propose your schedule within this range of time.)
• Budget (RM 50,000)
(Please propose your budget with the amount of grant given. RM 50,000)
• Implementation Team
(Please state number of your team members and their job title that will involve with this project. Does the team’s member process sufficient knowledge, technical skill on the technology chosen?)

v. A declaration letter certifying that the project presented
• Has not been otherwise grant aided
• Has not been pre-purchased by any developers, publishers.
• Is not part of a school syllabus


3. REQUIREMENT:

i. Proposal submission:
• A soft copy of the proposal in .doc format. PDF format will not be accepted
• A soft copy of the Application Form (1st page of this document only)
• A printed copy of the proposal in A4, portrait format with comb bind.
• A printed copy of the Application Form must be separated from the bind proposal. Attach the form to the proposal with paper clip.


4. IP RIGHTS

• Violation of copyright is prohibited. The company or individuals hereby declare and represent to MDC that the work is original and that no part and portion of the work is an infringement or violation of any IP or any propriety rights of any third party. Failure to do so will result in automatic disqualification.
• The IP Rights in the works shall vest with the company / individuals.
• MDeC reserved the rights to showcase the Game and Game information for promotion.

5. JUDGING PROCESS

• A panel of 4 judges from the industry, to be selected by MDeC including representative from MDeC, will review all submission received.
• After the closing date, the panel will choose 10 best submitted entries for the pitching. 3 winners will be chosen and automatically eligible for the grant.
• Each company / individual will have to submit their presentation/pitching material 1 week before the pitching day.
• During the pitching day, each company / individual will have to test their presentation/pitching material an hour before the presentation started. Laptop and LCD Projector will be provided. They will also be given 5 minutes to pitch their idea, game play, business module, schedule & budget, technical approach, game content development and commercialization of their game. And another 5 minutes for Q&A. Presentation aids and styles are open to creativity of each company.


6. MONITORING PROCESS

• The winners will sign an agreement with MDeC. This is to ensure that the parties (MDeC and grant receiver) agree with the requirements of this project; completion of game 6 months from the signing of agreement plus the usage of “CADC Lab” and “Content Accelerator Lab” facilities for their production.
• A monthly meeting with industry experts with compulsory attendance, to assist the winner develop and deliver their game.
• A monthly progress report is to be submitted to MDeC, to monitor the development of the game and for disbursement process of the grant.


7. CONTEST ENTRIES WILL BE JUDGED BASED ON THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

i. Business plan & Competitive analysis
- Does the company / team marketing plan in terms of marketing activities, strategies, unique selling points, and also target audience suitable and applicable to market today?
ii. Development schedule & budget
- Could this game actually be made into a real game today with the given budget and time?
iii. Completeness of Technical documentation
- Is the technical approach suitable for this particular game?
iv. Completeness of Design documentation
- Does the design document describe every aspect of the game with inclusive of character bible, prop/background design, level design, music, SFX design and etc?
v. Commercialization
- Can this game be sold in local/international market today?
vi. Pitching day presentation aids and styles

* (Failure to comply with any of the above requirements will result in automatic disqualification.)
